FAQ: Pools

- How is my position in a pool calculated?

Every time someone records a payment against a bill that has been placed in a pool, and it involves a debt between you and another member, your position in the pool will be recalculated. Your "position" is the difference between the total amount of debt that you owe to other members of the pool, and the total amount of debt that other members of the pool owe to you. It doesn't matter who actually paid for what, simply that overall you either owe or are owed an amount in the pool.

This lets you easily see how all of the previous bills and loans have added up or cancelled each other out over time. When you choose to settle up, the amount that needs to be paid is equal to your current position, either from you to other members of the pool, or vice versa. Depending on the size of the pool, and how many bill and payments have occurred, you may only need to make or receive a single payment to settle up, but on some occasions two or more may be required. In either case, it is a whole lot easier than trying to repay each individual debt!
